Description
Quaqua mammillaris is a Quaqua mammilaris is a succulent shrublet that usually branches from the base to form dense, upright clusters. This spiny succulent has short stems that are 4- or 5-angled, bearing hardened tubercles with sharp, yellow-brown tips. The tubercles are irregularly arranged on the stem and the stem sap is clear. Bunches of 3-15 velvety purple-brown flowers appear in autumn (April to May in South Africa) in the upper 2/3 of the stem, and open simultaneously. Unlike most other stapeliads, it usually roots from the centre of the stem.
It is quite cold resistant (But needs low ambient humidity). Plant in a sandy mineral rich soil that is well draining. This species is distributed over the winter rainfall areas of Namaqualand and can be found all the way to Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape province of South Africa.. Plants on offer are seed grown, approx. 3 years old and 15 – 25cm tall.
