Description
Mammillaria mammillaris is a captivating, slow-growing cactus that typically grows as a solitary globe or in small clumps, forming a glossy, light-to-dark green stem that’s spherical to short-cylindrical and measures 8–20 cm across, exuding a distinctive latex when cut. Its surface is adorned with spirally arranged, ovoid-to-conical tubercles up to 1 cm tall (following 8–13 parabolic rows), with little to no wool in the axils. Young areoles burst with fluffy white wool, giving way to 6–16 spreading radial spines that start yellowish-white to reddish-brown, fading to grey with age, and reach a dainty 5–8 mm in length—creating a soft yet striking, almost velvety armored appearance.
Native to the coastal region of Venezuela.
