Description
Bijlia dilatata, also known as the Prince Albert vygie, is a dwarf perennial mat-forming succulent with whitish-green, club shaped leaves. It can grow to be over 12 cm in diameter and has bright yellow flowers on short stalks. The leaves are thick, smooth, and hairless, with flat inside surfaces, deep keels, and an angular upper part.
Also commonly known as Bijlia cana, it is endemic to few sites just north of Prince Albert, South Africa, in the southern area of the Great Karoo desert.
This species grows on silcrete patches, daisy-like yellow flowers seem to grow out of solid rock, making one wonder how their roots find source of sustenance.
They prefer a mineral based sandy soil mix with very good drainage. They are winter growers and flowers tend to appear from June through to August. Increase the frequency of light watering to once per week in winter, reducing to once every two weeks in summer.
